GOOD Solar NEWS in MARYLAND

solar photo.jpg

Solar power accounted for almost half of Maryland's renewable electricity generation. Solar powered-generation was more than five times greater in 2023 compared with 2015. About three-fifths of the State's solar generation came from small-scale, customer-sited solar photovoltaics (PV), such as rooftop solar panels, and the rest of the generation was at larger utility-scale solar farms. By the end of 2024, Maryland had about 1,750 megawatts of total solar generating capacity installed. The State's largest solar facility—located on the Eastern Shore—came online in late 2022 with a generating capacity of 80 megawatts.

The EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act of 2008 created the EmPOWER Maryland program to incentivize energy efficiency and conservation efforts. As part of their EmPOWER Maryland portfolios, Maryland’s five largest electric utilities offer programs to help Maryland’s households and businesses save energy and money through a variety of incentives, such as free or discounted energy audits, weatherization, and efficient appliances.

In 2024, the Maryland General Assembly enacted House Bill 864, which made updates to the EmPOWER Maryland Energy Efficiency Act. The law requires utilities to add new incentives to help Marylanders make the switch from fossil fuel-powered heating and appliances to efficient, electric alternatives. The law also requires Choptank Electric Cooperative to begin offering energy efficiency programs to customers.
